Practice Faster Than You Play.

We don't have one special drill this works with. Instead we use this concept in many different practice situations we do. The idea behind this is that we believe if you can practice at a faster pace than what happens during game time, then you can teach your players to slow the game down in their mind while it is happening. We believe that is crucial to making smart, quick decisions.
We have found this is a great help for us in our defensive part of practice. You can start with getting everybody's attention by going through a really fast paced infield/outfield session. We don't stop to correct mental mistakes at this time, we make the players correct htat part themselves. We find that slowing down just lets them off the hook and gives them time to think about things. That's time they don't get in the game. You can also practice short game defense by playing with 55ft. bases, which makes the defense think and react quicker. You can use this concept with most drills you do, and you will be surprised at how quickly your players catch on and improve on quick and smart game decisions.
