Type: drill
Purpose: A warmup drill that focuses on quick releases and throwing accuracy under pressure, without wearing out arms.
Explanation: Put down marks to create a 40’ to 45’ square on the infield and another equal size square on the grass. Pick random teams of four, and put one player behind each marker. Throw the ball from player to player twice around the square one direction and twice around going back the other way, so that each player per square makes four throws.
It is always a race, either against another team of four or one team against the stopwatch. Change the composition of the groups after every game. Receivers should give a visual target and a verbal call, and throwers should keep their pivot foot planted the first two throws and turn hips hard the last two throws. The receiver of the last throw must sell the out to win.
There are many variations. When two teams play, the winners rotate out while the losing team plays again against a new group. With small teams or the day before a game, use just one square and a stopwatch and have a time requirement. Twenty or 21 seconds is expected, less than 20 seconds is good and 22 seconds or above is too slow.
