Type: drill

Purpose: 1. Making correct angles and turns on the bases 2. Sliding techniques 3. Reading the pitcher and getting a good jump 4. Responsibility of the on-deck hitter 5. Communication with coaching staff 6. Conditioning

Explanation:

Player A: Swings a bat in the batter’s box and sprints to first base to beat out an infield hit. Player B: Starts halfway up the first baseline and sprints to sec- ond base as aif she hit a double. (I have my players perform a pop-up slide into second.) Player C: Starts at first base and sprints to third base. (I have my players perform a head first slide.) Player D: Starts at second base and sprints to home. Player E: Starts at third base and takes two strides and returns to the base to tag up as if a fly ball was hit. (Third base coach can relay to the player that the ball was caught.) Player F: Starts in the on-deck circle and sprints to the left-handed batter’s box area to inform the runner on third to stand up and not slide and informs the runner coming from second to slide. The player then takes the position of Player A and starts the rotation again. The next player in line takes the position of Player B’s starting point.

*All of the players assume the position of the previous player at each base that they ran to and perform the same task as the previous player.
Base coach’s responsibility: 1. Communicate to each player like a game situation with arm signals, waving them to the next base. 2. Make sure your players are touching each base the proper way. 3. Make sure your players are sliding the proper way.
