Purpose: This drill is designed to practice routine outfield play in a quick, efficient manner with manner with outfielders seeing the ball from home plate (not a foul line). In addition, this drill works to improve vocal communication between infielders and outfielders.
Explanation: You can do this drill with one or two groups. A coach hits on first base side to two left fielders. Another coach his on third base side to right field and center field (or vice versa, doesn't matter). If the first base side coach hits to center field and left field to match left instead of right field. Both coaches need feeders, and all primary infielders must be at their positions with empty buckets. Usually two rounds of each set are completed. If you are late in the season or are using it as warm-up, one of each set will do.
#1 Left field to third base; center field to second base; right field (on ground) to first base.
#2 Left field to home with tag (keep ball off the line); center field to third base (keep ball middle to right-center gap); right field to third base.
#3 Left field to second base (ball in gap - if caught in air to relay); center field to home - cut available (again, ball hit to right side of second); right field to home-cut available
#4 One coach hitting; all are scooping to home - game tying or winning run.
We like to follow this up with a quick first base through third base tag at plate. Crisply and quickly.
