LPFA Conducts Draft
The Ladies' Professional Fastpitch Association recently conducted its first-ever College Senior Draft, with Fresno State's Jamie Southern being selected No. 1 overall. Candrea Honored
USA Olympic and Arizona head coach Mike Candrea has been announced a finalist for the United States Olympic Committee's Coach of the Year award. The winner will be announced on May 1 during the USOC Coach of the Year Banquet in Carson, Calif. Other finalists include April Heinrichs (Soccer), Yevgeny Marchenko (Gymnastics), Eddie Reese (Swimming) and Dane Selznick (Volleyball).
At Long Beach State...
Meredith Cervenka collected a 3-0 record and a 0.00 ERA at the 2005 Long Beach StateInvitational last weekend (Mar. 11-13). Cervenka posted three shutouts and
allowed just 15 hits in 21.0 innings of work with 18 strikeouts. In fact
Cervenka didn’t allow a double or a triple in the three-day tournament.
Meredith was dominant in the 4-0 win over LMU on Mar. 12, when she allowed
just three hits in seven innings and struck out 10. Cervenka is 9-3 overall this season with a 1.17 ERA with 84 strikeouts. She has five shutouts on the season...she is the program’s all-time strikeout leader with 527.
And At South Florida
In the games played last week, Tiffany Stewart led South Florida in batting average, hits, triples and on base percentage. Against Temple, Stewart batted .750, drove in three runs and went 3-for-4. In the Tennessee Tech game, she was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2, hitting a triple and double while scoring two runs. Stewart scored the game-winning run against Penn State in the eighth inning, while batting .667. She was also a threat on the base path, as she stole three bases in three attempts. Her offensive production helped the Bulls put together a record of 6-1 this past week while leading them to the championship in bracket B of the Speedline Invitational.
Texas pitcher Cat Osterman yhrew two no-hitters in two appearances this week, including her second perfect game of the season, with 37strikeouts to one walk in 14.0 innings. She now has three no hitters on the season which includes a pair of perfect games. Osterman has 12 career no-hitters and six career perfect games and has moved to 8-2 overall and slid up to No. 9 on the career NCAA Division I career strikeouts list, now with 1,219 in 622.1 innings.
Down In Savannah ...
Armstrong Atlantic State catcher Amber Hunt had a great week for the Pirates. The sophomore pummelled opposing pitching this week in nine games, hitting
.559 with six home runs and 19 RBI. She hit two home runs and drove in six
in a 10-2 win over Coker on Saturday. Her three-run home run
erased a 2-1 deficit and gave the Pirates a 6-2 win over Lander on
Wednesday. Hunt also hit four doubles, scored 14 runs and slugged
1.206 on the week. On the season, Hunt is hitting .451 with nine home
runs and 35 RBI in just 25 games played. She leads the Peach Belt
Conference with a .939 slugging percentage. The Pirates are 16-9 overall
in 2005.
