LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Oregon state champion Ridgeview and Taunton, which will play for its fifth straight Massachusetts state title on Friday, continued their winning ways to move into the first 10 in the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll this week.
Ridgeview (27-1), whose only loss this season was a 11-6 defeat at the hands of Mountain View on May 14, rolled past Thurston, 9-0 on Saturday, to capture the Class 5A title and close the year on a six-game win streak.
Taunton (24-0) stayed unbeaten with a 2-1 triumph over Bishop Feehan in the Division I state semis on Wednesday and advanced to its fifth consecutive championship game, where the Tigers will play the winner of today’s matchup between Wachusett Regional and Lincoln-Sudbury. If Taunton wins on Friday, it will be school’s 10th title.
Meanwhile, Lincoln-Way Central (34-2) and Donovan Catholic (26-2) tumbled out of the top 10 following playoff losses as the top-seeded teams. Lincoln-Way Central got bounced by third seed Lockport, 2-0 last Friday, in the Illinois sectional final, while the Griffins were edged by second-seeded Mount St. Dominic 4-3 on Wednesday in the New Jersey Non-Public A state title game after upending ranked rival St. John Vianney, 8-4, in last Thursday’s South Jersey Group A final.
No. 12 Glenwood (35-1) scored three victories over the last week, including a 2-1 win on Monday versus Centralia to advance to Friday’s Illinois state semifinal against Prairie Ridge.
No. 13 La Salle Academy (25-1) wrapped up the Rhode Island Division 1 state title on Sunday with a 5-3 triumph over Chariho, while 19th-ranked Beecher (37-2) claimed the Illinois 2A crown with a 5-2 win versus Carterville on Saturday.
It was better late than never for Lebanon, which joined the mix at No. 16 as the spring season winds down nationally. The (23-3) Warriors defeated Centerville 3-1 in the Ohio state Division I final on Sunday after needing nine innings to beat Lancaster in Saturday’s state semi. They finished the year strong, winning their final 12 games.
State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the NFCA Spring High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.
