LOUISVILLE, Ky. —Windsor capped a perfect season with a Colorado Class 4A state championship to leapfrog Oklahoma 4A runner-up Blanchard for the No. 2 spot behind three-time Oklahoma 4A titlist Lone Grove in the penultimate GameChanger/NFCA Summer-Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll of the season, the Association announced on Thursday afternoon.
The (29-0) Wizards defeated Green Mountain, 16-1, and Ponderosa, 10-0, on Friday, then dispatched Fruita Monument, 13-3, in the semis and No. 8 Holy Family, 6-2, in the final on Saturday.
The rankings remained largely unchanged with just two states — Georgia and Missouri — still playing.
Colorado 4A runner-up Holy Family (25-4) won three games over the past week before running into Windsor, No. 9 Buford (27-3) beat Richmond Hill, 14-6, in Wednesday’s Georgia 7A state playoffs, and No. 10 Lutheran (24-4) and 11th-ranked Cherokee Trail (24-4) both lost to Broomfield in the Colorado state 5A tournament.
Elsewhere, No. 17 Troy-Buchanan (29-4) defeated Francis Howell, 3-1 in Saturday’s Missouri Class 5 state quarterfinals, Lassiter (24-4) moved up six spots to 18th with a 12-0 shutout of Veterans in the Georgia 6A playoffs, No. 19 South Effingham (26-3) lost 2-1 to Houston County in the Georgia state 6A tournament, and 20th-ranked Legend (22-6) was routed 10-0 by Cherokee Trail in the Colorado 5A quarterfinals. Eaton (20-7) slipped one place to 24th following its loss in the Colorado 4A quarterfinals.
State rankings submitted by the NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the GameChanger/NFCA Summer-Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule. Five states — Colorado, Georgia, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Missouri — play a fall fastpitch schedule, while Iowa recently completed its summer season.
